Armour Glass Coating: Layers and Aftercare

Armour Glass Coating has a different application process from paint coatings. In this video, Bradley demonstrates Glass V2 from preparation through final wipe-off, then explains layering and maintenance for the windshield, side windows, and rear glass.

Why Glass Preparation and Layering Matter

This demonstration focuses on applying Armour Glass Coating, building coverage on the windshield, and understanding the current formula's aftercare. Glass needs its own process. Copying the flash time and cure schedule of a paint coating can make the job unnecessarily difficult.

The key is a thoroughly clean surface, controlled application, and complete residue removal. More layers cannot compensate for polishing oils, old contamination, or missed areas underneath. Start with the preparation the glass needs, then work methodically so you can see exactly where each layer has gone.

Prepare the Glass Before Opening the Coating

Bradley discusses washing with Decon Soap, removing bonded contamination as needed, and cleaning the glass thoroughly. A windshield that looks clean can still carry road film, minerals, and traces of old products. Assess the surface after washing rather than coating over roughness or visible deposits.

Where necessary, a suitable glass-cleaning polish process can help remove remaining contamination. Bradley demonstrates light polishing as a preparation step. That is not a promise to remove deep scratches, chips, or every etched water spot. Glass correction requires appropriate products and technique, and damaged glass may need professional assessment.

After polishing, remove residue completely. Bradley finishes with two passes of Panel Prep, using clean towels so the second pass does not simply redistribute the first pass's oils. Inspect edges, the lower windshield area, and the perimeter near the rubber seals.

For the broader preparation sequence, see our windshield coating walkthrough. Keep the glass cool and dry, work out of direct sunlight, and follow the coating's safety directions.

Apply the First Layer in Manageable Sections

  1. Prime the applicator. The current directions begin with three lines of coating across a fresh applicator. Once it is primed, smaller additions maintain coverage.
  2. Start with half the windshield. This keeps the application and wipe-off within a comfortable working area. Larger sections can be manageable in ideal conditions, but a beginner gains more control by starting smaller.
  3. Use overlapping circular motions. Apply deliberate, even pressure as directed, covering the whole section rather than tracing a few thin lines across it.
  4. Level the coating. Armour Glass can be wiped off immediately. Do not wait for a paint-coating-style flash cycle. Use the initial wipe to remove most excess.
  5. Finish with a second towel. Use a fresh finishing towel and inspect for cloudy patches, dark areas, and streaks before continuing.
  6. Complete the other half. Slightly overlap the center boundary and inspect the perimeter where excess product can collect.

Bradley uses a circular first wipe and more deliberate straight finishing passes to check clarity. Your final result should look uniformly clear, without a greasy film. Examine the glass from inside and outside so reflections do not hide a missed area.

How Many Layers Should You Apply?

Glass area Approach in the demonstration Reason for attention
Windshield At least two complete layers Regular wiper contact and greater exposure make thorough coverage especially useful
Side and rear glass One complete layer Follow the same careful application and leveling process on every section
Additional layers Optional after a properly leveled layer Extra applications do not replace preparation or guarantee proportional durability

The current formula does not require a waiting period between layers. After completing and leveling the first layer, you can proceed with the next. You do not need to import an overnight or multi-hour wait from another coating's directions.

The applicator is already loaded for the second layer, so you generally need less additional product. Still watch for an even film. Follow a clear pattern over both windshield halves so you do not accidentally apply the second layer twice to one area and miss another.

Immediate Water Exposure Versus Good Aftercare

The current Armour Glass directions allow the vehicle to be driven and exposed to water immediately after application. This differs from coatings that require a protected initial cure period. Use the directions for the formula you have, especially if comparing this video with older coating advice.

Bradley additionally recommends avoiding unnecessary wiper use and detergent exposure for the first 24 hours. Plan the installation for suitable weather when possible. Always use the wipers whenever needed for visibility. The coating is an aid to glass maintenance and water behavior; it does not replace functioning wipers, clean washer fluid, or safe driving judgment.

Before driving, make sure all coating residue has been removed and the view through the windshield is clear. Do not leave visible haze expecting normal driving to remove it.

Keep Coated Glass Clean

Road film and bug residue still need cleaning. Maintain the glass with compatible products and clean towels, and pay attention to the wiper blades, which can carry dirt back onto the windshield. Remove contamination gently rather than running the wipers repeatedly over a dry, dirty surface.

Bradley mentions AMPLIFY as an optional drying or maintenance aid. Use a restrained amount and finish until clear; more product on glass can mean more wiping. Our streak-free windshield guide covers cleaning technique when clarity needs attention.

Glass Coating Questions

Do I need to wait for rainbow flashing?

No. The current Armour Glass process allows immediate removal. Work from its directions and the demonstration rather than waiting for the behavior of a different paint or glass coating.

Why do I see streaks after finishing?

Check for residual coating, a loaded towel, or contamination left during preparation. Use clean finishing material and inspect the glass from different angles. Resolve visible residue before driving, rather than trying to conceal it with another layer.

Can I guarantee a set service life by applying more layers?

No. Preparation, exposure, washing, wiper condition, and use all influence performance. Complete coverage and good maintenance are more useful goals than simply maximizing layer count.

Does coating remove existing windshield damage?

No. It does not repair chips, cracks, deep scratches, or etched defects. Assess those separately before deciding what preparation and protection are appropriate.
